Nikola Tesla’s Forgotten Final Years

Nikola Tesla is remembered today as the visionary behind alternating current — but the story of his final decades is far stranger and sadder than his early triumphs suggest.

By the 1920s, Tesla had fallen out of the spotlight, burning through backers with increasingly ambitious ideas: wireless global power transmission, death rays, machines to communicate with other planets. Investors grew wary, and funding dried up.

A Quiet, Isolated Ending

He spent his last years living alone in New York hotel rooms, reportedly forming an attachment to pigeons he fed in the park, and died in 1943 with comparatively little money to his name — despite holding hundreds of patents that had reshaped the modern electrical grid.

It took decades, and a resurgence of public fascination, for Tesla’s contributions to be fully recognized outside engineering circles.

Why do you think Tesla’s genius wasn’t enough to secure his own future?
