For eight years, the family of FDNY firefighter Gary R. Box did not know that this last image of him existed.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Box and his fellow firefighters from Brooklyn’s Squad 1 responded to the attack on the World Trade Center.

Traffic inside the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel prevented larger emergency vehicles from moving forward, so the firefighters collected their equipment and continued toward Manhattan on foot.

Among the people trapped inside the tunnel was Danish businessman Erik Troelson. He had entered before the first plane struck and initially did not understand what was happening. When firefighters began passing the stopped vehicles, Troelson raised his camera and took a photograph.

One of those firefighters was Gary Box.

Table of Contents

Toggle

An Unexpected Discovery Eight Years Later

The Man Behind the Camera

Gary Box Final Photograph: A Lasting Image of Courage

An Unexpected Discovery Eight Years Later

Box was killed during the rescue operation at the World Trade Center, and his remains were never recovered. His family knew that he had entered the disaster area, but they had no image showing the final part of his journey.

That changed in 2009.

Gary’s sister, Christine, visited the 9/11 Tribute Center, where she was shown a tunnel photograph that had been incorrectly identified as Gary. The man in that image was actually Brian Bilcher, another member of Squad 1 who was also killed that day.

The mistake convinced Gary’s father, Judson Box, that other photographs might exist. He began searching the online archives being assembled by the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

After Judson spent hours looking through the collection one night, his wife, Helen, continued the search. The following morning, she called him into the room and showed him a photograph of a firefighter carrying his equipment through the traffic-filled tunnel.

This time, it was Gary.

Judson later described finding the image as both an emotional shock and a blessing. It gave the family something they had never expected to receive: one final glimpse of Gary alive and carrying out his duty.

The Man Behind the Camera

The family contacted the museum, which eventually connected Judson with Troelson, the man who had taken the photograph. The two corresponded for months as Troelson tried to reconstruct what he remembered from inside the tunnel.

They later met at a memorial fundraiser, where Judson was finally able to thank the stranger whose camera had preserved his son’s final known journey.

Gary Box Final Photograph: A Lasting Image of Courage

The photograph does not show Gary Box posing for recognition. It captures him in motion, carrying heavy equipment through stalled traffic and heading toward a disaster whose full scale was still unknown.

He was not alone. Other members of Squad 1 were making the same journey, and 11 members of the company were killed on September 11.

The image has endured because it shows what first responders did that morning. As civilians tried to escape the danger, firefighters moved toward it—not because they knew they would survive, but because people needed help.

Gary Box never returned home, but one photograph ensured that his courage would never be forgotten.

Sources: National September 11 Memorial & Museum, National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, New York Post report from 2009

The Gary Box final photograph almost never came to light.
