Silent film star Buster Keaton

Buster Keaton and the Birth of Physical Comedy

Share your love

Long before modern stunt coordinators and safety rigs, silent film star Buster Keaton was throwing himself into some of the most dangerous physical comedy ever put on camera — and doing his own stunts.

In one famous scene, the facade of a two-story building collapses around him, with Keaton standing in the exact spot needed for an open window to pass over him untouched. There was no special effect — just precise measurement and total trust in the math being right.

Comedy Built on Real Risk

Keaton was injured multiple times during his career, including a broken neck he didn’t discover until years later, from a stunt gone wrong that he simply walked away from at the time.

His deadpan expression amid genuine physical chaos became his signature, and his influence is still visible in physical comedy and action filmmaking today.

Would audiences even accept this kind of real, uncushioned risk in a comedy today?
