Portrait of Pocahontas

The Real Story of Pocahontas

Share your love

The Pocahontas most people know from popular retellings bears little resemblance to the historical Powhatan girl who actually lived through the early Jamestown colony.

She was likely only around 10 to 12 years old when English settlers arrived in Virginia — far too young for the romance later attached to her story. She was later captured and held by the English as a bargaining chip, converted to Christianity, renamed Rebecca, and married colonist John Rolfe.

A Life Shaped by Politics, Not Romance

Her marriage helped ease tensions between the colonists and the Powhatan Confederacy, and she was later brought to England as something close to a diplomatic showpiece, where she died at around age 20, likely of illness, before she could return home.

Stripping away the legend reveals a young girl caught between two colliding worlds, with very little control over her own story.

How much of what we “know” about historical figures is really just the version that was easiest to romanticize?
