Operation Mincemeat: The Dead Man Who Fooled Hitler

In 1943, British intelligence needed to convince Nazi Germany that the Allies planned to invade Greece, not Sicily — and they did it using a corpse.

Officers dressed the body of a homeless man who had died of poisoning as a fictional British officer, complete with a fabricated identity, love letters, and fake invasion plans chained to his wrist. They released the body off the coast of Spain, where it would be found and the documents passed to German intelligence.

A Deception That Changed a War

German high command took the bait. Forces were shifted away from Sicily, and when the real Allied invasion landed there in July 1943, resistance was far lighter than it would otherwise have been.

The operation remains one of the most audacious deception campaigns ever executed — built entirely around convincing an enemy of something that never happened.

Could a plan this strange actually work today, in an age of instant digital verification?
